I understand about the danger of having hordes of tourists to the artworks. When I was visiting the Uffizi Gallery in Florence, some tourists were almost stepping into the Sleeping Arianne sculpture because they were trying to photograph Michelangelo's Tondo Doni painting.

But I don't think the Vatican will reduce the numbers of visitors at Sistine Chapel. It's not a cheap ticket. So if they reduce it, they might loose a big chunk of money. And we know how expensive to maintain those priceless artworks and other things (who knows? maybe only God knows) that Vatican is doing.
